Grandma’s Oatmeal Cookies

Do you know a sure fire way to tell if a recipe is going to be an amazing recipe? When the recipe is only written down because your mother copied down each ingredient as HER mother put them into a bowl just so she could make her favorite cookies for herself after she was married. This recipe is my grandmother’s oatmeal cookie recipe, and it truly is like no other oatmeal cookie I have ever had. They’re not chewy, they don’t have raisins in them. They are soft, and tender, and full of cinnamon deliciousness. My family has been known to fight over the last one in the cookie jar!

My grandmother had been making these for years but had never written down the recipe, she was busy raising 8 children and working in a shoe factory so who could blame her?  When my mother and father got married my mom was copying down all her favorite recipes to take with her and when she asked for the oatmeal cookie recipe my grandmother informed her there wasn’t one, she just threw the ingredients in the bowl until it looked right.  So, the two of them set out to make the cookies and write down the ingredients together!  I love the story almost as much as I love the cookies–and trust me when I said that’s a LOT.

Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream, or a mug of warm coffee and you’ll be in warm cookie heaven I promise! (My dad swears by these with a bowl of fresh sliced peaches, but I’m not a fan of peaches so I can’t testify to that amazingness.

I love oatmeal cookies and it’s so hard to see them without raisins. Bleh! I like chocolate chips, or nothing at all, except all of the dreamy ingredients above!

Do you know I have never purchased shortening? My mom and grandmother used it for baking, but I never have. I may have to try it though, because these look delish.
